Belly dance is one of the oldest dance forms in recorded history. Today it is widely known as a sexy dance celebrating a woman’s innate sensuality. But its root is not only in erotic elements, but also in religious and cultural origins.
It is a folk dance, developed in various versions around the world depending on culture and region, but it originated as part of fertility cults in ancient civilizations. The modern name of belly dance came from the French version called “danse du ventre,” or dance of the stomach. Danse du ventre was translated into belly dance by Americans when it gained national attention at the Chicago Exposition in 1893.
This was exclusively a woman’s dance. Women danced for other women when they gathered together. Historians have suggested that the modern form of belly dance was promoted by gypsies. As gypsies moved from place to place, they would pick up different moves from various regions and blend them together. The harems where women from different places gathered also promoted a blending of movements.
Although there are male belly dancers, belly dance is uniquely suited to the female body, emphasizing smooth and sensual movements of the torso and hip in shaking or shimmy moves. In ancient times, this was a sacred dance. Dancing with bare feet connected to the ground, “it represents maternity, the mysterious conception of life, the suffering and the joy with which a new soul is brought into the world,” said Armen Ohanian, a 19th century belly dancer.
In line with this idea, modern day birth classes teach movements found in belly dance. The hip and torso movements strengthen the abdominal and pelvic regions, preparing a woman for labor and birth. It also provides a good cardiovascular workout, increasing flexibility and can burn as many calories as light jogging, swimming or riding a bike.
Belly dance is good for mental and physical health. It can give a woman a great self-esteem boost as she discovers the beauty and power of her body, while getting the emotional connection and support of other women. As for the health benefits, research suggests that it can help prevent osteoporosis and alleviate the symptoms of menopause. According to Wikipedia, all the organs affected by the hormonal changes of menopause are strengthened by increased blood circulation, based on the research of Anette Paffrath at the University of Hamburg.
“Dance is the hidden language of the soul,” said Martha Graham. Belly dance developed as the expression of the hidden essence in every female. Unfortunately, belly dance a mixed reputation because of people’s confusion of its sensual elements with blatant sexuality.
